Atlas Lathe Compound/Crossfeed Dial upgrade

Almost completed my Dial upgrade.
From 1″ to 1.5″ does not sound like much but Whoa!!!! what a diff.

Need to build a index ring for the compound. then Ill be done.

Prior to this I had added thrust washers to my factory Atlas dials. So when building the new dials I just
used the thrust bearings.

(Abbove) Rubbing I took from my compound
I generated this design from my rubbing
Imported into Autocad then overlaid shape.
Which got imported into Cambam for further modification.

Right off the mill.

I engraved all three dial at the same time on a small CnC machine
you can see the engraving bit in the background

From (above stock)
I profiled and parted the dials one by one.
See below

A good shot of a before and after.
compound(new) Vs Crossfeed (old)
This is a no brainer mod!

Now both of them.

Still need to add a ring just behind the new dial.

Gawd… I love my dials!

  1. Hi Sam, really interested in the dials for my Craftsman 101.07403 12×36 lathe. Also the thrust washer what do you want for the compound and crosslide set?
Have you tried to darken the index markings? I have seen to just paint the dial and just before it fully dries to wipe the paint off with solvent.

          David,
I tried to send you an email. It got returned. Not sure how to contact you.

  3. David says:

    Are you still selling these?

    1. Floor Sweeper says:

David, Officially No. I was selling them on ebay for some time as a side hobby of sorts. then other projects kind of eclipsed the dials.
Im no salesman or marketer. I probably could have sold hundreds of these. not sure your application.
The 2″ dials can be made to work on an atlas/craftsman using the same process I used to make the 1.5″ dials.
Although I do have a stock pile of them 2″, Im out of the 1.5″ I’ll send you an email if your still interested.
BTW thanks for reaching out. 🙂
